The titre de séjour is the residence permit that authorizes a non-EU foreign national to stay in France for more than three months. For many Ghanaians, it becomes the most important administrative document after arrival.

Main permits you may meet

• VLS-TS: a long-stay visa that also works as a first residence permit once validated online.
• Carte de séjour temporaire: usually valid for one year for studies, work, family life, or other reasons.
• Carte de séjour pluriannuelle: a multi-year card issued when conditions continue to be met.
• Carte de résident: a longer card, usually valid for ten years, after several years of regular residence.

Many applications and renewals now go through the ANEF online portal. Some situations still require prefecture contact, so always check official instructions for your department.

Student permit resource threshold in 2026

From 1 August 2026, students applying for or renewing a student residence permit should prepare for a higher monthly resource threshold: EUR 847 per month, instead of EUR 615 per month. Practical habits

Keep copies of your passport, proof of address, school or work documents, identity photos, and previous permits. Renew early. If you receive a récépissé, keep it safe because it proves your application is being processed.
